The apartment is clean up

So I think I mentioned that I moved to a new apartment a few weeks ago. The official move was May 13, but I had my old place until May 31, so I didn't stress too much about getting everything out by my "move date," since as long as I got the big stuff out, I could bring the rest gradually.

Worst. Idea. Ever. (OK, now I'm just doing it to annoy her.)

I made maybe three or four trips to my old place between May 13 and May 26, bringing semi-full carloads back. Of course, being a procrastinator extraordinaire, I left the bulk of the work until the last minute. I spent most of Memorial Day weekend up there packing and loading stuff into my car and unloading it back at my new place. (P.S., it's about 26 miles each way between the two...and gas is over $3 a gallon...yeah.)

My plan had been to be totally done by the end of MD weekend. Do you think that happened? Of course not. I reasoned, "well, I have it until Wednesday." I spent all evening after work Tuesday at it, with still a way to go. So of course, it came down to the last possible moments. The Dude was sweet enough to come help me on the final night. We spackled, painted (using paint the old landlords had left behind -- yay!), swept, scrubbed, discarded, packed, and finally vacuumed. The Dude had brought over his decently working Hoover WindTunnel since all I had was a pathetic hand-me-down electric broom. He left around 10 after a few hours of hard work (he has to get up very early for work these days) and I stayed until 12:30. Oops, I guess technically I outstayed my lease.

The title of this post refers to an annoying email I received from my current landlord. He bought the unit from the previous owners around the new year. I've never met him or had any interaction with him except a few emails re the lease. Yesterday I emailed him:

It's the last day of the month and hence the last day of my lease, and I'll be in the unit this evening just finishing getting the last of my stuff out and cleaning up. After that, should I mail you the keys, or drop them off or meet you somewhere?

And he replied, and I paste:

You can leave the keys in the unit – I assume the unit will be clean up especially the carpet since you had a cat

His appalling ignorance of the English language aside, what a jerk. Yes, I just said the apartment would be "clean up," and yes, I'm aware I had a cat, thanks, and yes, you'll probably need to get the carpet professionally cleaned, like every apartment owner invariably does between tenants. It's called "normal wear and tear." Plus he bought it at a great price from the previous owners, who actually were at least minimally responsive to me as landlords, and now he's reselling it to some investment company that's just going to renovate anyway, so why be a dick about it?

OK, I'm officially done venting about this. It's over. I took the last item out (a floor lamp) and left the keys on the kitchen counter at 12:32 a.m. I've done all I can do. So why did I have dreams about the apartment all night?

Maybe because it wasn't clean up well enough?

If he is selling it and it will be totally renovated, what does it matter if the carpet is clean up at all?

Jerk.

Well, that had been the plan, to sell and renovate, but actually, maybe that's changed because he did offer me another year's lease at the last minute. Oops, and I just reread the email exchange and he'd told me to vacate by 5/30. So I was a holdover for two days!
