Flower power

There has been a lot of talk of flowers this week between me and friends. It started during the day Wednesday, when the Hoyden's sweet hubby brought her a yellow calla lily plant -- callas are her favorite, as is yellow. I told Red Fraggle, as we are often talking flowers (we like to plan our imaginary weddings...shhh, don't tell our boyfriends -- although actually, hers kind of knows, although maybe not the true extent), and she too loves calla lilies and is strongly leaning toward featuring them in "her wedding." I decided to reveal to her, after all this time, that I cannot stand calla lilies, nor, indeed, any sort of "lilies" (whether part of the lily family or not) except lily of the valley. I love the latter so much that I intend to feature them prominently in "my wedding." But Fraggle loves all manner of lilies, particularly stargazer. She was shocked -- shocked!! -- to learn that I do not. She said she needs time to get over it.

Then that same evening, The Dude bought me roses just because. We were at a supermarket and I wandered to the flower section to look around, and he came and found me there, asked what I liked best (roses -- OK, I'm boring), asked which of the roses present I thought were the prettiest, and bought them right then and there. Aren't they lovely?

They're even prettier today now that they've opened up more. He was so excited by how excited I was by this that he indicated an intention to have roses sent to me at work on occasion. !!

The next day, Fraggle, another friend, and I were IMing about "our wedding flowers" (at least the other friend is kind of closeish to getting engaged) and we were exchanging photos of bridal bouquets from wedding sites. The almost-engaged friend loves calla lilies too, as it turns out. Why? Why?? Anyway, apologies to the lily-lovers out there, but you can keep 'em!

Just to clarify--callas aren't my favorites--traditional lilies are (I believe callas aren't even real lilies, and neither are lily of the valley--but I'm not positive). And of traditional lilies, I do like stargazer best, although I love yellow ones as well.

Callas ARE very elegant and regal, though, and I certainly wouldn't be at all upset to receive them. Your hatred of the lily is just irrational.

callas are a finicky flower in that they are a flower, but not in the girly flower sense. i did feature callas in "my wedding" (a real, already taken place variety), but that is because i wanted to carry few flowers and white flowers. we had a very small budget that i won't even put here b/c you wedding planners would wonder how we didn't eat finger food off of paper plates for that money.

but, callas are like the unflower to me. i mean i'm a flower lover in general. but callas are strong stalky little things, kind of like me, and since they aren't all fluffy and puffy, i find them to be almost sophisticated and on the "flower edge." besides, they are cool plants in general and i can grow them, unlike many other things.

now, would i have pouted to receive your lovely white chocolate raspberry truffle bouquet? hell no! they rock and smell good i assume, a task callas have not yet mastered.

as for hating flowers, i have those i would rather not get. but daisies and callas rock in my world. keep the red roses though. they are a bit too generic for me.

OK, OK, I stand corrected: I overstated both Hoyden's and Fraggle's love of calla lilies! All I know is, they like them better than I like them.

I tend to agree re red roses. I don't dislike them by any means, but I prefer other-colored roses. The Dude commented yesterday that he saw some yellow roses at the store that he thought were really pretty. So I won't be surprised if I receive yellows sometime.

I love yellow flowers generally--yellow lilies, callas, roses, gerbera daisies... Yellow is just so festive and happy.

I have to say, I am now dying to know Hoyden's wedding budget. She could probably help us plan "our weddings" while saving us a bunch of imaginary money.
